Summary:

For years, Hope Carmichael, survivor of a shocking child abduction, has lived a sheltered existence under the protection of her fanatically religious father. Now, liberated by her mother, Hope prepares to start life over as a normal kid in an Atlanta, Georgia, high school.
Normal, that is, until Hope meets Michael, a gorgeous emancipated teen with a mysterious past and a strong interest in Hope. And soon, Hope’s life is filled with questions. What’s behind the angry looks Hope gets from Lucas, leader of a gang of students? Who’s responsible for sending Hope a strange valentine inscribed with Bible quotations? How does this relate to the sinister business of human trafficking that operates on the periphery of Hope’s suburban world? And is Michael really a protector, or something more sinister—and just why does he seem so familiar?

Hope Carmichael is the survivor of a shocking child abduction that has to make her fanatically religious father shelter her. Now, she has chosen to move in with her mother in Atlanta, Georgia, and she's ready to become a normal school girl.
That is until she meets Michael, a handsome emancipated teen with a cryptic past and a strong interest in hope. Soon Hope's life is filled with intense questioning. Why is Lucas so mad at her? Who sent her a Valentine with Bible quotations? How is this related to the human trafficking net that operates near her? And what is Michael? A protector or her doom?
This book has a thrilling story and one of the most amazing things is that it teaches you real-life skills, related to human trafficking, while you're reading a fun and supernatural story.
The relationship between Michael and Hope is one of great complexity and I love the way she doesn't give in completely to him, keeping her reservations about him on the mind, and always trying to be rational and safe. Even if she's completely falling for him she tries to analyze the situation and reflects about it.
Hope deals very well with her stormy past and her social insertion in her new school is realistic, she doesn't make friends right away, not everything goes well, which is very important to keep the book grounded and realistic. This dose of reality only makes the paranormal aspects more believable and even real because it seems that they're occurring in our world and in our time, not in some crazy alternate reality.
This book also introduces the topic of dysfunctional families, which is great because it makes it stand out from other books. It's normal that not everything is picture perfect, and that's okay because that is the reality in our world.
This is a great story for all ages and everyone that loves paranormal YA romance that includes values and important information in people. If you feel hesitant about reading it please give it a shot, you'll not regret it! Remember: Diversity is great and essential to your knowledge.
